Literacy lessons in Year 9 have been using the favourite hobbies and interests of the pupils to help stimulate an interest. We started off this work by collectively brainstorming some ideas about what activities we enjoy doing outside of school. These included football, hockey, Formula 1, music, computer games and skateboarding.
Sticking with the skateboard theme, Year 9 then started work on reading The Skateboarders by John Goodwin. Each pupil read out a short extract from the text. Our task was then to answer a series of questions and to try and explain some of the motivations for the characters in the story. This has been a useful exercise to assist with reading, listening and writing.
