Year 7 Literacy Podcast

Year 7

Year 7 have been continuing their literacy work reading and exploring ideas in various fairytales. We have been encouraging the pupils to develop an understanding of each story, and to structure each scene in the correct sequence.

We started a recent literacy lesson by looking at a slideshow of various fairytale scenes. We held a class discussion about what we could see in each picture and how this particular event relates to the overall story. Some great detail was passed on in the explanations, showing that the pupils are continuing to progress with their memory and story telling skills.

We then advanced this work to focus upon adjectives that we can use. We asked the pupils for a series of describing words for each of the characters that we have been learning about. We wanted Year 7 t think more about the personality of each character, rather than a physical description.

We finished our literacy lesson with each pupil making his or her own fairytale information book. Having drawn a front cover featuring a particular character, we then listed the adjectives inside that best describe them. You can listen to Year 7 explaining a little more about their work in the podcasts below.

Year 8 Anti-Smoking

Year 8

A major theme during our humanities lessons in Year 8 has been how to live a healthy lifestyle. Having learnt about what makes up a healthy diet, the focus for recent lessons has been to look at lifestyle choices and how these are so important for our health.

The dangers of smoking have been a major theme that Year 8 have been looking at. We started off our work by looking at the scientific harm that tobacco can cause within our bodies. This ranged from the relatively mild effects such as having a furry tongue, through to the often-fatal situation of having a heart attack caused by smoking.

We also looked at the many harmful substances that can be found inside a cigarette. Finally we finished off this work by drawing some anti-smoking posters for our class display board.

Year 9 Literacy

Year 9

Year 9 have been producing some wonderful work based around our current class reading book – Buddy by Nigel Hinton. This is a very challenging book that gives the pupils the opportunity to think about some quite complex situations involving family and relationships.

We like to encourage a shared reading experience during these sessions. Pupils took it in turns to read out short passages during a class reading session. We always encourage pupils to share their thoughts about the story as the plot develops.

Our written work for the Buddy book has involved each class member writing a newspaper report based on the main character. We asked Year 9 to first think of a suitable headline for the newspaper story. We wanted the pupils to appreciate how this is the main part of the story that will draw readers in. We then added in a sub-heading, and then a short report on the story, written in the style of a newspaper.

Year 9 have also shared a class display for this particular work. We acted out a number of scenes from the story to help us appreciate some of the feelings and emotions shared by the main characters. Photographs were taken of these action shots. We added these to the display along with the Communication in Print explanation of what is happening in each scene.

Year 10 Maths Video

Year 10 have been using the school laptops to work on a data gathering exercise during our recent maths lessons. We introduced to the pupils the idea of creating a survey, and then displaying the data findings using Excel.

We started off this work be helping each Year 10 pupil to think about a subject matter in which they could survey their friends. These included favourite sports, computer games or colours. Our next step was to carry out the survey and to keep track of the totals using tally charts.

The laptops were then introduced into this exercise. Year 10 have been learning how Excel can be used to help us to understand and interpret data. We entered the details of our survey into a spreadsheet. This was then exported into a bar chart. The style and design was then changed so as to be able to explain the results of our survey as clearly as possible.

You can watch a short video above of this exercise being explained by one of our Year 10 pupils.

Year 11 Chuckball Video

We have introduced the game of chuckball to our Year 11 pupils. This is a competitive team sport that draws upon some of the skills used in basketball, as well as the sharp shooting that we are familiar with from football.

A large part of the learning around this sport has been to understand the rules. Chuckball is a non-contact sport, plus there are specific rules about how and where we can shoot from.

Teamwork is also important when playing chuckball. Year 11 have been finding out how we need to create space. Our teammates need to find someone who is free before they can pass the ball to them. You can watch a short demonstration of the Year 11 chuckball skills in the video above.

Year 8 French Christmas Cards

Year 8 have combined a celebration of Christmas and our love of language! We decided to use one of our recent French lessons to help the pupils to create a French themed Christmas card.

We started off this work by being introduced to some French Christmas phrases. We are continually building upon our French vocabulary in Year 8. Each different time of the year is a great opportunity to introduce new words.

Each Year 8 pupil was asked to choose a selection of our favourite French Christmas greetings. We then made some classy Christmas cards, and added in our French vocabulary. As you can see from the video above – tres bien Year 8!

If you would like your child to have a lunch, the cost is £1.85. School uniform must be worn.

Year 9 D & T Video

Year 9 are coming towards the close of a highly skilled D & T project. All pupils have designed and made a bottle opener. We started off this work with a rectangular aluminum strip. Our task was to design the contours needed for the bottle opener, then cut these out and present a final piece of work that has been filed down and polished.

A large part of this project has been about the pupils being able to make the correct choice when deciding which tools to work with. The filing down and polishing of the bottle openers offered a wide range of different files to select. Safety issues have also been a large part of this project.

A selection of our Year 9 pupils explain more about their D & T work in the video above.
