Year 9 have been producing some wonderful work based around our current class reading book – Buddy by Nigel Hinton. This is a very challenging book that gives the pupils the opportunity to think about some quite complex situations involving family and relationships.
We like to encourage a shared reading experience during these sessions. Pupils took it in turns to read out short passages during a class reading session. We always encourage pupils to share their thoughts about the story as the plot develops.
Our written work for the Buddy book has involved each class member writing a newspaper report based on the main character. We asked Year 9 to first think of a suitable headline for the newspaper story. We wanted the pupils to appreciate how this is the main part of the story that will draw readers in. We then added in a sub-heading, and then a short report on the story, written in the style of a newspaper.
Year 9 have also shared a class display for this particular work. We acted out a number of scenes from the story to help us appreciate some of the feelings and emotions shared by the main characters. Photographs were taken of these action shots. We added these to the display along with the Communication in Print explanation of what is happening in each scene.
