Year 10 Literacy

Year 10

Year 10 have been introduced to some new vocabulary whilst reading The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, our current class reading book. The sensitive text contains many new words which some of the students are unfamiliar with. Examples include ignorant, grateful and indignant.

We set the students the task of Dictionary Digging. This requires the pupils to find the word in the dictionary, and then write a short sentence to explain the meaning.

This literacy work will advance as we encourage the pupils to ‘own’ the words when they produce some creative writing. Tasks will include writing in a closed activity – sentences are provided and the challenge is to see how the new vocabulary can fit into these.

The final task for this work will be to ask the students to create their own written sentences using the new vocabulary that we have been learning.
