Year 7 have started an introduction to fractions during recent maths lessons. Maths teacher Miss V set many different tasks to see what existing knowledge the pupils already have.
We used the example of pizzas to help the pupils understand what it means to have a half or a quarter of a pizza. The pupils talked about their favourite toppings, and how much of each pizza they would like. Paper plates were used to help visualise the fractions.
Future lessons will involve Year 7 sampling fajitas. We will be asking the pupils to slice these into different fraction sizes. The idea is to make the learning as relevant as possible for the pupils.
