Year 10 Heart Dissection for Entry Level Science Learning

Year 10 are working well on their Entry Level Science qualification. Our current topic is body organs and systems. This learning has included theory and practical.

A recent lab session involved the class members dissecting a lamb’s heart. Pairs of pupils were given a heart and a set of tools to use for the dissection.

Science teacher Miss McNie gave a safety briefing session. Students wore gloves, as well as being respectful to the tools being used.

Glass rods helped the pupils to poke inside the blood vessels. Dissection needles were able to open up the heart in more detail.

The class members were asked to describe what they could see as they progressed with their dissection. They were able to identify the arteries, the heart strings, valves and the septum.
