Year 7 Basketball Skills

DSC02524

Year 7 have been working on improving their basketball skills as we approach the end of the spring term at Lansdowne School. This is a very inclusive sport that allows boys and girls of all abilities to compete together.

Some key skills needed to be mastered ahead of a game play situation being set up. Mr Lee and his team set up three work stations in the school gym.

The first activity involved encouraging movement with the ball. We have been learning how a player can only move with the ball if they bounce it. This work station activity involved the pupils feeling comfortable with either a low or a high bounce.

The second work station saw the students practise their shooting from different angles. Mr Lee explained how we don’t always get the chance to shoot in basketball from right underneath the basket.

The final exercise helped the pupils to feel comfortable with the ball. A sideways walk whilst dribbling the ball formed part of this learning activity.

Score sheets were kept for each activity. This allows Mr Lee to be able to track improvements, and to see where possible future support is needed.

All three of these skills were then put together as part of a game situation towards the end of the session. This was also an opportunity to work together as a team. Pupils were asked to find space, and to help our other team mates if they were being blocked.
