Year 9 Mental Maths Video

Year 9 have been completing some incredibly challenging mental maths work during the first few weeks of the new school term. Various activities and games have been set up to help with our learning. Mental maths in where we are expected to solve number problems in our head. We have been focussing in particular on multiplication and division sums.

One popular activity is division dominoes. The students are presented with a pile of cards. Each card contains a sum and a separate answer. Our task is to form a complete circuit of cards so that each sum matches up with a corresponding correct answer on the next card.

This game can become slightly tricky when we have used up most of our cards. We may need to use a card that is already in the circuit, and then try and find a way of rearranging the whole sequence of sums.

Sounds confusing? See for yourself in the video above!

Other Year 9 groups have been working together to solve some mental maths questions. The pupils spoke through the problems that they have been presented with to try and understand the question, and then come up with a successful strategy.

Another area for this work has been the idea of greater than or less than. We have also added in the concept of equal to. We have seen that a number can be greater than or equal to a second number.
