Year 9 at Lansdowne School are coming towards the close of their English work reading The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. This has been a very challenging book for the pupils to read. It tells the story of the son of a Nazi officer and is friendship with a Jewish boy.

We usually start each session with some shared reading. A chapter of the story is read. Miss Duncan has been asking questions at every stage as the story develops. This is a good opportunity for the pupils to recap on the existing knowledge that we already have about the characters and the plot.

Year 9 have been exploring the relationship between Bruno and Shmuel, the two main characters. Various table work activities have been organised for the different learning achievements of each class member.

Some pupils have used Communication in Print as a means in which to pass on their knowledge of their story. Other groups have been carrying out thorough comprehension writing exercises to explain their knowledge of the story.

You can listen to a couple of pupils sharing some examples of their work in the recordings below.
