Year 8 have been following current affairs on a daily basis by watching the BBC Newshound programme. The pupils have been finding out that it is important for us to understand current affairs to help us with our conversation skills. This is a good starting point when talking to friends about what is happening around the world.
Each day the short news clip is watched. The pupils are then encouraged to form an opinion on what they have just watched. Questions are then asked about each clip. These are asked so as to have some relevance to our own lives.
A recent example included watching a film clip about floods in India. The pupils were asked to describe what affect this might have on their daily lives if they were unfortunate to suffer from a major flood.
