The Year 10 pupils have almost completed their study of different types of musical instruments that can be found in a traditional orchestra. Four different musical families have been the focus for the students: percussion, brass, string and woodwind.
This work has involved the different families being compared and contrasted, with differences and similarities in the instruments being investigated. Miss H and her staff have been helping the pupils to identify how a sound is made, and how this can be varied.
The final part of this learning was an exploration of a clarinet. Miss H kindly brought in a clarinet from home. The pupils took it in turns to assemble the instrument in the correct order, and then to experience how a sound is made. The pupils were asked to identify each piece and explain what roles it plays in creating the overall sound.
