The Year 9 students at Lansdowne School were treated to highly practical piece of science learning as part of British Science Week Demonstration Day. As the name suggests, this was a special day where a practical understanding of science took place in schools.
Year 9 have been learning about the heart and circulatory system as their main science topic for the second half of the spring term. Demonstration Day was the perfect time in which to dissect and explore a real heart!
Miss McNie was able to source seven lamb hearts for the purpose of this demonstration. These were ideal for our learning as they are a similar size to a human heart.
The first part of the learning involved the demonstration by Miss McNie. This was carried out in the safe learning environment of the school science lab. All pupils were required to wear protective gloves and spectacles.
It was then time for the Year 9 pupils to explore for themselves. They were asked to look for some of the features in the hearts that we have been learning about during the spring term. A colourful school display is now on show to help other pupils find out about our Year 9 science learning.
