Inspirational Assembly Themed Around Volunteering

1

All pupils at Lansdowne School took part in the first celebratory assembly of the new summer term following the Easter break. Miss H and the Lansdowne School Choir led the way with rousing versions of Let It Go and Waving Flag.

Mr Jukes then welcomed a very special visitor into our assembly. Dezi from Team London Volunteers wanted to address the students about the benefits of volunteering in our community.

This was an incredibly powerful speech from Dezi. Pupils were first asked to describe what it means to volunteer. We then looked at some historical figures that have inspired Dezi in her work. These included Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King.

Dezi then explained a little more about the background and work of her organisation, before concluding with a call for Lansdowne pupils to think about what skills they could offer. Reference was made to some of the existing work that students already carry out with the nearby Brixton Food Bank.

Mr Hilton then handed out the individual achievement certificates for the first week back of teaching. These included the new Homework Achiever certificate – a special award to recognise pupils that put in a little extra effort with their homework.

The Class of the Week trophy was jointly awarded to Year 7 and Year 9, with all students achieving 100% of their ticks for the first week of the new term.
