Year 11 Food Tech Kitchen Safety Skills

2

Safety in the kitchen continues to be the main food tech theme for the Year 11 students at Lansdowne School. Mr Evans and his team want all pupils to feel confident and safe when they are independently preparing food in our new kitchen space.

A recent session started off with some theory. A short video was watched showing a woman working in the kitchen. Many basic food safety mistakes were made. The Year 11 students were asked to identify these errors at they watched the film.

This learning was then taken into the practical part of the session. On the menu was a tasty afternoon pancake treat. Each class member was given an ingredients list and a recipe to follow. Mr Evans and his team observed, looking for any food safety issues that might occur.

It was encouraging to see the students self-correcting any mistakes that they made. It is better to recognise that the recipe maybe hasn’t quite been followed, than to press on and try and disguise a mistake.

The end result was a class of Year 11 students each being able to enjoy their afternoon pancakes. All of the pupils were successful in their efforts. Very few food safety errors were called out by Mr Evans and the food tech team.
