Measurements have been the main learning aim of the Year 7 pupils at Lansdowne School during the first few weeks of the new autumn term. Miss V and her maths team have been helping the pupils to recognise the relationship between centimetres and metres, and then to use this knowledge to measure and compare different objects.
We started off this practical work by measuring the length of one of the school corridors. We found that this measured 38m in total. Other classroom items were then measured, such as the door or the whiteboard.
Each class member completed a worksheet which first needed an estimation, and then a correct measurement to complete the task. An example was: is the table taller than a metre? After a sensible estimate was made, the Year 7 pupils then measured the actual height.
