Fractions have been our main maths focus in Year 7 at Lansdowne School. Miss V has introduced this topic by helping the pupils to fold pieces of card. We have used this technique to see how a whole can be halved, and then quartered.
This work then led to the building of fraction walls in our maths book. These show the relationship between whole numbers, halves, quarters and eighths. Year 7 observed that the bigger the denominator, the smaller the fraction.
We have also used shapes to help our fractions learning. The pupils have been asked to find halves and quarters on a number of different shapes. This work will continue in Year 7 with number fractions being introduced to the pupils.
