Year 7 Start Fractions Maths Topic

Maths work in Year 7 has looked at recognising halves and quarters. Paper plates were used to help demonstrate this.

Each pupil followed the instructions from class teacher Miss V. We first folded the plate down the middle. A line was carefully drawn along the fold to show a half of the plate. This half was then halved itself. Another line was drawn to represent a quarter.

Year 7 were asked how many equal parts were on their plate. We could see that four quarters make a whole one.

This led to some fractions being written down. The pupils were able to make the connection between one quarter and three quarters. We saw that when combined, these make up a whole.

New vocabulary was used during this session. Each class member should now be familiar with numerator and denominator. A self-assessment exercise took place at the end of the lesson. This will help Miss V to plan further resources and learning.
