Year 12 are learning about the importance of labels during food tech lessons. A recent lesson looked at food allergies and why labels are so important for people with dietary requirements.
Small groups brainstormed different types of food allergies. Examples included nuts, wheat and crustaceans.
Food tech teacher Miss Anderson then explained a little more about how food is labelled. We looked at the traffic light system and how each food group is broken down.
A practical activity then followed. The students were asked to choose two similar types of food from the ingredient table. The challenge was to examine the food labels and determine which food was the healthiest.
Explanations were needed to justify the decisions. Each class member presented their findings to the rest of the class. We also spoke about how each food can be used as part of a healthy diet.
