Y11 Set up Science Experiment to Test Electromagnetism

Science lessons in Year 11 are looking at electromagnetism. We have discussed what electromagnets are useful for. The students have seen how electromagnets have an on and off position. This is and useful in doorbells, loudspeakers, or even in scrapyards to help separate metal.

Science teacher Miss McNie set the challenge for the students to build their own electromagnets. The main learning objective was to find out the relationship between the number of copper coils in a magnet, and the strength of the magnet.

The pupils worked independently. They were asked to collect their own equipment, and then to set up the experiment.

Nails with varying numbers of copper coils were used. A current was passed through the nail. We tested each nail to see how many paperclips it was able to hold.

The results were logged in our science books. The final part of the experiment was to show our results using a line graph.

We were able to conclude that the power of a magnet becomes stronger when we increase the amount of copper coils.
