Year 10 are learning about estimates and weight as part of their current maths topic.
We start each session with a brief maths warmup. Students are working on their individual times table knowledge. They are encouraged to use their mental maths skills to complete the tasks.
The main learning for a recent lesson was to estimate and then measure the weight of some items. We worked with both grams and kilograms.
Four objects were used for this task. The class members were asked to estimate the weight of a plastic cup, an orange, a pencil and a dictionary. We spoke about how an estimate is a sensible guess.
It was then time to weigh each item. The Year 10 students used the maths scales to take an exact reading. We then wrote a sentence to comment upon our estimation skills.
