Life Skills in Y10 with Students Baking Gingerbread Men

Life skills learning continues in Year 10. The students are working on their independent skills whilst using the food tech space.

We all know that we need to wash our hands and put our aprons on as the first tasks before any food preparation takes place. We then had a reminder of the Lansdowne FRESH Rules. These are especially important when working in the food tech space so we can all stay safe.

The pupils recently enjoyed making a hot chocolate drink. We then developed this mid-morning snack to include a gingerbread biscuit.

We played a brief game of OK or Not OK. The idea is that the students put their thumbs up or thumbs down as a response to various kitchen situations. These include eating the ingredients before they are cooked, touching the oven and washing up nicely.

Our practical learning involved needing the dough that we used to create a gingerbread man. We then added some patterns using a spoon.

Students also learned how to use the oven safely. We made sure we had some oven mitts before placing the gingerbread man in the oven to be cooked.

The final task was to wash up. Everyone enjoyed their gingerbread man and another hot chocolate as a mid-morning treat.
