Year 9 Learn about Gluten-Free Diet in Food Tech Lessons

Spring term food tech lessons for the Year 9 pupils are helping them to learn about the main elements in a gluten-free diet. We held a class discussion to consider what is meant by gluten-free, and why some people need to stick to this diet.

A recent menu item was a tasty cottage pie. We also focused on assembling the different layers needed in a cottage pie.

Our lesson started with each class member collecting the correct ingredients. We then chopped up the celery, onions and garlic. Each pupil was responsible for their own work area and making sure that the oven was heated up in time.

We heated up the chopped up ingredients on the hob. We then spoke about the importance of making sure the mincemeat was cooked correctly. This was added into our mixture.

Worcester Sauce, soya sauce and a small amount of tomato paste was added. We then mashed up the boil potatoes and added in a little milk.

The meat mixture made up the first layer in our trays. We then topped this off with the potato mixture.

An evaluation exercise took place whilst our cottage pies were baking. Each student described the taste, as well as answering some questions about a gluten-free diet. We concluded by stating how we might be able to improve our food tech skills in the future.
